Save the Animals, Nuke the Rest

This past week during the Israel-Hezbollah conflict, I have been noticing quite a few front page stories on Barbaro, the horse who broke his leg during the Preakness Stakes, one of the three races of the Triple Crown. When I mentioned how silly this was that a horse was incurring such large headlines during such a catastrophic time in the Middle East, my mother overheard me talking about Barbaro and yelled "Oh no, did he die?" Why would we care if Barbaro died? What is the better alternative for Barbaro, dying later? Why do we care more about animals than humans? Why do people see a limping dog walking down the street and start to tear up, but walk past a homeless person and think they deserve it?

Was someone actually putting this on the paper's cover? I thought it was bad enough that we were including a daily "Barbaro: still alive" story in the sports section for a while.

As for why people seem to care more about Barbaro than Israel/Hezbollah situation, I'd have to quote the Billy Joel song Miami 2017:

"The flames were ev'rywhere
But no one really cared
It always burned up there before"

Good lyrical reference! It still weirds me out a little bit that you like Billy Joel so much. But, it helped out in this scenario. Yeah, but horses have all died before too.

Hey what can I say about Billy Joel. I enjoy, above all, storytelling. He specializes in story songs.

And personally I agree with you about the importance of the respective events. The only explanations I can think of are that a) America's critics are right and we don't care about international affairs or b) there hasn't been much optimism about peace in that region since Rabin's assassination. The most optimistic thing that could be said about it recently since the election of the Hamas government in Palestine is that the Palestinian factions were spending so much time fighting that they didn't have as much time to attack Israel.
