What's Better?

1) Buy all eco-friendly, fair-trade goods.

2) Buy everything from WalMart, but donate the difference directly to needy families within your community.

I guess the question would be whether you want to directly or indirectly make someone's life better. Directly by giving the people down the street money. Indirectly by spending money on things that will 'benefit the future' children by not hurting the earth.

Really I would chose number 2 because that is just the kind of person I am.

...or indirectly in the present. you can give to people down the street (or more likely on the other side of town) a gift made by 12-year olds working 15 hour days for next to nothing...or you can buy products where the family of that kid on the other side of the world earns a competitive wage for its production. i don't have an opinion on the choice though...

it does but i think the free trade movement lets people help themselves a bit more rather than having some outsiders come "help" for a week and then leave.
