"Insert Your Name Here" Church

Think about some denominational and church names.

Pentecostal Church - we are totally into Pentecost.
St. Paul's Church - we are totally into that Paul guy.
Lutheran Church - Martin Luther, that's our guy.

how ridiculous is this premise? We distinguish ourselves based on a singular spiritual theme that we think we have right, or based on a single man other than Christ.

I guess that goes back to a time when each denomination thought they were exclusively the "true" denomination. Now, non-denominationalism is so popular, most protestants are far more likely to just call themselves Christians rather than Lutherans, Methodists, etc.

i like the optimistic idea that, as a whole, we're leaving that sort of thinking behind. But, I'm pretty sure most denominations/churches still think they're doing it "righter" than the rest.

I think the only reason there's no "Paul-ian" denomination is because he implicitly told us not to.

Perhaps we should require (or at least recommend) that every major religious figure make a public statement that their followers aren't allowed to make a new denomination out of their (revolutionary, I'm sure) teaching.

I don't think Luther or Wesley would like the splintering effect their movements had, but you can't say "Hey! Don't start a new denomination!" posthumously...

If that many generations did it, then given the opportunity we may come up with St. Tom's Methodist Church...

Heck, I was raised Catholic, and I pretty much just refer to myself as Christian.

Is this maybe an over-correction from the long-ago Catholic, this is what you believe or burn heretic type of thinking. The differences were so suppressed that now we focus so much on the differences at the expense of everything that's the same?

lol, my wife and i have actually talked about that before, with Church of Christ and Church of God. That's pretty much a claim for being THE church, isn't it?
