Seinfeld is arguably one of the greatest comedies of all time. And yet, I feel like the show, Friends, is often given equal weight, at least in terms of popularity among my generation.
And from a guy who watches both shows, that's an outrage. Watch an episode of Friends and an episode of Seinfeld back to back. I can't imagine you'll laugh harder at Friends.
So, what's the difference? Why the shared mass popularity between both shows?
Because Seinfeld is hysterical, but makes you look at George Constanza for a half hour. And Friends is chuckle-funny but gives you 5 1/2 fashion models.
Pretty people are fun to watch. But what George Constanza lacks in aesthetic genetics, he makes up for with hilarious "Woody Allen" self-deprecation and paranoia.
Maybe if George were hot, it wouldn't be as funny. But Chandler probably could have pulled off that character. And then it wouldn't be AS confusing when an unemployed man came home with an attractive girlfriend every other episode.
This is not a life update. This is a place where people are free to think.

I watched both shows, Friends off and on, and must say Seinfeld is a far funnier show.
I find myself quoting Seinfeld far more often. I have to say George is my favorite character. He was the underdog of the show that never got the break! Like the fortune he lost when he dumped his fiancée. And of course who wouldn't want to create a more successful fictional personal like Art Vandalay!
I found this blog from the most excellent podcast FlashForcast! Thanks for a great podcast.
Thanks David! Glad to have you! And now that I know you're a FlashForcaster (which means you're probably a brain) we really welcome your opinions here to help challenge us all!
Seinfeld was (IMHO) the perfect sitcom. Brilliantly written, suberbly acted. The only weak link in the whole series was Jerry Seinfeld. But it didn't matter, because everyone else was genius. Also, it was always fun to watch Seinfeld watching/enjoying his own show.
Seinfeld is pure genius(: it takes real life and transforms it into a satirical comedy. Friends is a good show to just have on when nothing else is on.
Oh Eric, you KNOW what I'm gonna say already, don't you ...?
IMHO, Seinfeld is totally overrated. I do like his stand up, but the show did nothing for me.
And imagine no longer - I DO laugh harder at Friends - more in a single episode than I ever did with Seinfeld.
The George Costanza / Woody Allen comparo is an interesting one, because I don't find Woody Allen particularly funny either.
you forget that "IMHO" means nothing in this forum. You lose again. Yet, all this helps me understand you better.
"you forget that "IMHO" means nothing in this forum."
Fair enough. But it means EVERYTHING in the REAL world.
BWAHAHA
not in the world this army's creating....
Which one's the half-model?
Matthew Perry?
Emily,
I intentionally left the door of judgment open.
